The process

Creating your bespoke wedding dress and evening wear

Creating a bespoke wedding dress is a fairly time consuming process so make sure you have at least three months to go before your wedding.

Initially you will come for a consultation – this is done in a relaxed and informal setting and helps us get to know each other. You can bring your Mum too! We’ll go through ideas and usually the bride-to-be will bring along some pictures of styles she likes from the internet or magazines.

There are samples in the studio available to try on if you want to see what a particular shape looks like on you.

We will then write a quote and send it to you, outlining the design, costs and payment schedule. If you’re happy to go ahead then we will meet again to take measurements.

Smooth or slubby silk

The ‘toile’ is then made up – this is a version of your corset and skirt made up in an inexpensive material (usually calico) which helps Jackie to adjust the pattern so your dress will fit you perfectly. Once you have tried on your toile you will get an idea of how your dress will look! You will need to choose the colour(s) of your dress at this point.

Once the toile has been made and Jackie has made a note of any adjustments she needs to make, she will purchase the final fabric. Jackie works with silk for the ultimate in luxury – you can choose smooth silk or ‘slub’ silk which hasn’t been spun as much so the finish is more textured. All dresses are fully lined - you can even choose a polka-dot lining if you're feeling fun! You can also try on different sizes of petticoat if your dress needs one and Jackie will buy one in for you.

Beads, pearls and crystals

Another fitting is required in your final fabric – this is when the dress really starts to take shape. Jackie will ask you about any finishing techniques you would like on the dress such as embroidery with added crystal, appliqué art or tucks, gathers and pleats. Dresses can be embroidered with beads, pearls or glass crystals as you desire.

When trying your gown on, you can also try tiaras, veils and other accessories Jackie has in her studio.

Once the dress is finished Jackie will store it – at no extra cost – until you are ready to collect it for your big day.

Corsets and skirts

This process is broadly similar if you are having a corset and skirt designed and made by Jackie Thompson Couture for any other occasion. Each item is lovingly hand crafted, made to fit you perfectly and is guaranteed to turn heads!
